Key Differences Every Developer Should Know When Developing Android or iOS Apps

There is a growing appetite for mobile devices and applications. Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS-powered devices are selling like hot cakes. Both platforms are leaders of their own and developers are concentrating their efforts on serving them with a great positivity.

Bestowed with awesome features and functionalities, both Android and iOS have allowed developers to come up with breathtaking apps while exploring new ways to market them.

However, for anyone involved in the app development, knowing their users and competition is a must. Developers need to be armed themselves with some basic facts that exist between iPhone and Android users so that they always stay ahead of the pack.

In this post, I am going to talk about some basic characteristics that are typical of Android and iPhone users. Knowing the innate traits of the users of different platforms can help any iOS and Android app developer to come up with better choices to engage their users and woo them. So, rambling on too much further, let’s discuss them in detail.

1. iPhone Users are Cash Rich as Compared to Android

Let’s begin with the fact that’s absolutely not a debatable. We all know how expensive IOS devices are as compared to Android devices, which are relatively available at average prices.

iPhone users have white collar jobs and they represent a richer spectrum, as compared to Android who boast blue collar jobs. The fact that iPhone attracts the more high-end market, it can be said that the users of this platform have deep pockets, as compared to the Android users who only want “a trendy phone that works”.

2. Android Users are Younger than iOS

Speaking of demographics, most of the Android users are between 18-24 years, whereas 29% of the iOS users are around 35 years and more. Also, 80% of the Android users possess a high school diploma than iPhone users who have postgraduate degree.

This means that the larger portion of users who’d going to access your app are younger (in terms of Android) so that the design of the app must catch their fancy. It should be trendy, yet at the same time, functional.

They love to customize their apps, home screens by trying out different launchers, live wallpapers and so on. As far as iOS is concerned, its users are more likely keeping their devices straightforward and spend more time trying out different apps.

3. Android Users are Engaged, But Not Loyal

Although there isn’t much difference between the engagement rate of Android and iOS, Ios users tend to show more loyalty towards their chosen device as compared to Android users.

The engagement by any app means average session length- the amount of time a user spends on an app- and the total number of sessions per month. Though there are many apps available to which Android users have remained loyal for a significant amount of time, still, the retention rate is low.

IOS users spend more time on an app, but still there is a difference between retention capacities. Android users hold onto their app 2% longer as compared to iOS users when talking about a short duration say 24 hours. But when it’s about a longer duration, say 30 days, this loyalty starts fading away as iOS users who boast an unquestionable loyalty to their apps.

4. iPhone Users are More Inclined Towards M-commerce

There is no doubt about the fact that Android is picking up more followers, but when it comes to e-commerce, then it’s iOS that’s taking up the driver’s seat. iPhone users show more propensity to engage in mobile shopping with 23% as compared to Android who is just 17%.

iPhone users are more interested in accessing new portals, visiting new shopping websites, and ordering from the same on a regular basis. This is an essential point for developers who develop retail apps or those seeking to monetize via paid apps or in-app purchases.

5. IOS Users are More Active Than Android

Studies have revealed that there are more iPhone users involved in net surfing as compared to Android. This is a crucial point to consider when developing a revenue-generating app. In addition, because of Android’s reach to low-end market segment, it’s quite hard to imagine Android outperforming iOS in terms of usage rate.

6. IOS users Are More Tech-savvy Than Android

Another thing that differentiates iPhone users from Android is their tech-savvy nature. But, this doesn’t mean that Android users don’t know about the technical details of their phone or apps, but they are more pragmatic in their approach.

Since iOS users are financially sound, they tend to show more interest towards trying out different technologies as soon as they are launched.

They key take away here is that developers should try developing apps that are practical and technically oriented. It must let them connect with their multiple iOS devices and give them something valuable.

All said and done! The above mentioned are some key pointers that every IOS developer and Custom Android application development company should know to define the success of their app.

This means that the larger portion of users who’d going to access your app are younger (in terms of Android) so that the design of the app must catch their fancy. It should be trendy, yet at the same time, functional.
